World Indigenous Peoples' Day observed at EMRS Loktak

Loktak, August 09 2026: The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed at Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Loktak, located at Tokpa Kabui village, Loktak Project on Sunday.

The Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) Loktak in a release said that the programme was organised to commemorate the rich heritage, culture, traditions and knowledge systems of indigenous peoples and to sensitise students towards the protection of their rights and natural resources.

The programme, organised on the theme "Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding life and wellbeing," was attended by Dr Laishram Amarjit Singh, I/C Principal, EMRS Loktak, along with members of the Village Authority - SK Gaipubi, Chief and Chairman; Sabulung Panmei, Luplaak; Houpanlung, Mantri; and Gideon Kamei, Chief and Chairman-in-Charge.

Vice Principal Amit Kalyan, in his keynote address, highlighted the significance of the observance and recalled the contributions and sacrifices of prominent tribal leaders, including Birsa Munda, Haipou Jadonang and Rani Gaidinliu, in safeguarding the rights and identity of indigenous communities.

Gideon Kamei, chief and chairman-in-charge stressed the importance of learning and preserving tribal history, culture and traditions.

He also highlighted the rich tribal heritage of the region and the role of the local community in the development of the school.

Dr Laishram Amarjit Singh, i/c Principal called upon students, staff and villagers to protect indigenous rights, preserve cultural heritage and safeguard nature by following the wisdom and practices passed down through generations.

Speaking on the year's theme, he underlined the importance of indigenous traditional knowledge in safeguarding life and wellbeing and urged the community to use natural resources judiciously.

He also highlighted the significance of traditional knowledge systems, particularly the role of Kabui Salaang Maiba, an ancient traditional healer associated with the Moirang Kangleirol.

The celebration featured cultural performances by students, including indigenous and tribal dances and a traditional fashion show showcasing the diversity and richness of tribal traditions.

The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to preserving indigenous identity, traditional knowledge and cultural heritage, while protecting nature and promoting the rights and well-being of indigenous peoples.
