Noney marks World Environment Day; plantation drive held at Thiyam village

World Environment Day 2026 was observed across Noney district on Friday with a series of environmental awareness and plantation activities under the global theme, "Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future" .
The nationwide campaign "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0" was also launched as part of the district-level observance.
The programme was led by Deputy Commissioner Vidyamari Sridhar and witnessed the participation of Superintendent of Police Divya Tanwar, officials of the Noney Forest Division and representatives of various government departments.
The celebration was held at 23 locations across the district, organised by the Noney Forest Division.
An awareness rally involving school students was also organised to promote environmental conservation and climate action among the younger generation.
Meanwhile, a large-scale tree plantation programme was also organised at Thiyam village under Nambol Assembly Constituency with the objective of transforming the village into a model green village.
Various saplings were planted around the premises of Ibudhou Laikom Laibung as part of the initiative to enhance green cover and environmental sustainability.
The programme was jointly organised by Lai Thougal Lup, Thiyam, The Three Clubs of Thiyam Village, Thiyam Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Thiyam Village Level Federation (VLF), and PDO Nambol, with support from the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Bishnupur, the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, and the Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB).
Besides plantation activities, saplings were distributed to villagers.
The programme was attended by several eminent personalities, including Dr Khangembam Shamungou Singh, Chairman of the Technical Committee, State Wetland Authority, Manipur; RK Amarjit Singh, Special Secretary, Forests, Environment and Climate Change, and Conservator of Forests; Dr T Brajakumar Singh, Director, Environment and Climate Change; Dr W Roshan Singh, Member Secretary, MPCB; Waikhom Romabai, DFO Bishnupur; Dr A Sanatomba Singh, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Economics, Khongnangthaba University, Imphal; Dr RK Bijen Singh, Principal, Ibotombi Institute of Education, Canchipur; retired ZEO Bishnupur N Chingkhei Singh; and retired Headmaster of Keinou High School and Adviser of Lai Thougal Lup, Soraisam Santikumar Singh, among others.
