Congress sweeps urban bodies polls

With the counting of votes for the elections to eight Municipal Council and 18 Nagar Panchayats nearly complete, campaign for formation of councils and panchayats have begun.
The counting of votes which started yesterday is still continuing as counting for some wards of Nagar Panchayats are yet to be completed.
For the eight Municipal Councils, the counting is complete.
Out of the total 109 wards of eight MCs, Congress won 62 seats, 44 seats went to independent candidates while MPP won only three seats.
According to a report from the State Election Commission, out of 18 wards in Thoubal MC, Congress candidates won in nine wards.
The rest went to independent candidates.
Out of 12 seats in Kakching MC, Congress won 10 seats and two went to independents.
For Nambol MC, Congress won 13 seats out of the total of 18 seats.
MPP secured two seats while three went to independent candidates.
Eleven out of the 12 seats of the Moirang MC went to Congress while one went to an independent candidate.
In the 10 seat Jiribam MC, Congress and independents won five wards each.
Even though Congress was victorious in the above mentioned five MCs, the result of the three MCs of Mayang Imphal MC, Bishnupur MC and Ningthoukhong MC are not encouraging for the Congress though other political parties too could not secure majorities.
Out of 13 seats of the Mayang Imphal MC, Congress won in only five seats and independents secured eight seats.
In the 12 seat Bishnupur MC, the Congress party won in only three wards while seven seats went to independents.
MPP won in one seat.
In the 14 member Ningthoukhong MC, Congress won in only six seats which is two short of a majority.
Out of 18 Nagar Panchayats where election was held on January 3 simultaneously with the election in eight MCs, counting of three NPs are yet to be completed while counting of 15 NPs have been completed.
Out of 13 seats of the Andro NP, Congress and independent won five seats each while one went to the CPI.
Two seats are lying vacant as no candidates filed nominations for candidature.
For the Lamlai NP, CPI and Congress won in four seats each while one went to an independent candidate.
Congress won in all the nine seats in the Sekmai NP.
In the nine seat Lamshang NP, Congress won in eight seats and one seat went to the CPI.
Four out of the 11 seats in the Samurou NP went to the Congress and one to the NCP while the rest five were won by independents.
For the Wangoi NP, four out of nine seats went to the Congress while five were won by independents.
Out of the 12 seats for the Thongkhong Luxmi Bazar NP, Congress won in two, NCP one and the other eight seats were won by independents.
Congress and MPP won one seat each out of the nine seat Lilong NP (Imphal West) while others went to independents.
Out of nine seats in the Lilong (Thoubal) NP, Congress won in five while the remaining four went to independents.
In the nine seat Sugnu NP, Congress won in five seats while the others went to independents.
Congress won in four out of the nine seats of the Kakching Khunou NP, two seats went to the CPI and one to an independent.
CPI won in two out of nine seats in the Kumbi NP where Congress won in four seats.
The rest went to independent candidates.
