MUC's Sanamahi Laining Study Centre to finally take off

Imphal, February 07 2026: The long-delayed Sanamahi Laining Study Centre at Manipur University of Culture (MUC), hindered by financial constraints and other obstacles, is finally slated for inauguration soon.

Prof Paonam Gunindro, Vice Chancellor of MUC, made the announcement today during the closing ceremony of a sixmonth certificate course on "Meetei Pung and Eshei Sintak Sindamba", organised by the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board (LSTB) at Haying Khongbal Uphong Yumpham.

The course, which saw 42 students participate, aimed to promote traditional Manipuri arts, including Pung Yeiba, Nupa Eshei, and Nupi Eshei.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Gunindro elaborated that while a full-fledged course might take time, efforts are underway to introduce several smaller, specialized courses at the new centre.

He emphasized the unique nature of Manipuri culture, noting how culture and sports have elevated Manipur's global standing.

He highlighted that Manipur's Nata Sankirtana is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a testament to the region's distinct traditions and characteristics.

Prof Gunindro stressed the importance of preserving indigenous culture and traditions for current and future generations, stating that a community's culture is its backbone.

He noted that understanding one's birth, marriage, and death rituals is essential to knowing a community's identity.

The closing function was attended by dignitaries, including LSTB vice president Vidyapati Senjam, member secretary Maisnam Shivadutta Luwang, board member Namoijam Tomba, Maibarel Maisnam Iboba Luwang, Khumanthem Kashiram Meetei (Pung Hanjaba), Keithellakpam Mohori Meetei (Eshei Hanjaba) and Sarangthem Tharongangbi Leima (Eshei Hanjabi).

Certificates were distributed to the participants, who then presented 'Nupa Eshei' and 'Nupi Eshei' performances.
