DESAM hails High Court's verdict

Imphal, September 06 2025: The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has welcomed the judgement passed by the High Court of Manipur directing the Vice-Chancellor of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, to complete the process of appointing a regular Dean for the College of Agriculture (CoA), Iroisemba, by October 31, 2025 .

In a release, DESAM informed that the order came in response to the "Writ Petition WP (C) 76 of 2025" filed by a petitioner challenging the re-appointment of a superannuated faculty member at CAU, Imphal.

DESAM asserted that the faculty member was reemployed as Dean of CoA and given administrative & financial responsibilities even though she has attained the age of 65 years, in clear violation of the CAU Act and UGC guidelines which restrict reemployed teachers from holding administrative or financial responsibilities.

DESAM continued that in the final hearing on August 26, 2025, the Court ordered the Vice Chancellor to complete the appointment of a regular Dean within two months and added that the interim arrangement assigning charge to Dr N Brajendra Singh as Dean will remain in effect till the appointment of a regular Dean.

DESAM further stated that the High Court's ruling has dealt a severe blow to the powerful individuals who are exerting undue influence in the functioning of the university, including appointment of employees beyond the permissible age limit.
