IGNOU hosts 38th Convocation Ceremony

The 38th Convocation Ceremony of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU),popularly known as People's University, was held at Asha Hall, Asha Jina Complex, North AOC, Imphal today.
The event organised by IGNOU Regional Centre Imphal was graced by dignitaries, including Manipur University of Culture, Vice Chancellor, Prof Paonam Gunindro Singh; IGNOU Regional Centre Imphal, Senior Regional Director, Dr Salam Dilan Singh and Deputy Director, Dr O Jayalakshmi Devi.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Paonam Gunindro Singh praised IGNOU for offering high quality, innovative and need based programmes at different levels to all those who require them at affordable costs.
He also appreciated IGNOU for providing Gyan, Vigyan and Jeevan Darshan to the needy people of the country.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Salam Dilan Singh said that in the last 40 years, IGNOU has made significant contributions in the field of higher education, community education, extension activities and continual professional development.
"The Regional Centre, Imphal began its journey in 2000 with 3 Learner Support Centres.
At present IGNOU RC, Imphal has 16 Learner Support Centres in the state of Manipur", he added.
He asserted that today, IGNOU Imphal Regional Centre has become the nucleus of the Open and Distance Learning activities in Manipur, catering to learners from rural and tribal areas, disability groups, jails inmates and rehabilitation centres, Government and nongovernment organisations, parents and home makers, employed and employers.
He also shared that IGNOU Regional Centre Imphal has started live class channel based counselling in Manipuri language through Swayam Prabha transmission for the undergraduate programmes from Regional Centre, Imphal Studio every day.
"Till date, 285 number sessions have been conducted and are also available on youtube", he added.
Dr Salam Dilan mentioned that the inclusion of Manipuri language in the bouquet of channels has now opened up doors of education and educational support for educational aspirants living in far flung areas where conventional educational facilities are limited and people prefer to be taught in their own mother tongue.
The Regional Director also announced that 1808 learners under IGNOU Regional Centre Imphal are eligible for the 38th Convocation of IGNOU which includes Master degree -1423, Bachelor's Degree - 300, Diploma-29 and Certificate programmes - 59.The programme ended with distribution of degrees to the successful learners.
Notably, the main Convocation Ceremony was held at IGNOU New Delhi and simultaneously at 39 Regional Centres of IGNOU.
Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education and Prof Uma Kanjilal, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU graced the ceremony at IGNOU New Delhi as presidium members.
Altogether, 313770 students were conferred degrees, diplomas and certificates.
