Training programme on scientific Makhana cultivation held in Thoubal

Thoubal, June 04 2026:
A one-day fanners training programme on the scientific cultivation of Makhana, aimed at enhancing farmers' livelihoods under the Central Sector Scheme (CSS) for development of Makhana in Manipur was held today at Tentha Thongkhong Bamon Mandop, Thoubal.
The event was organised by the District Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department, Thoubal, and saw the participation of around 80 farmers.
The chief guest of the function, Assistant Commissioner Thoubal Tensubam Sangeeta, highlighted the nutritional value and growing popularity of Makhana in the state, referring to recent research and investigations that classifies it as a "superfood" .
She noted that under the State Government under the Makhana Development Scheme, two farmers from each district were selected for advanced training at the Agriculture University, Sabour, Bihar.
Sangeeta emphasized that Manipur's climatic conditions are highly favourable for Makhana cultivation and urged farmers to avail themselves of government schemes in consultation with Agriculture, Horticulture, and Soil Conservation departments.
"These initiatives can boost self-employment opportunities for youth and contribute to income generation for farming communities," she said.
District Agriculture Officer, Rk Umakanta Singh stated that several welfare and development schemes are being implemented by the Agriculture Department for the benefit of farmers.
He stressed the importance of sincerity and dedication among farmers in order to maximise the benefits of these initiatives.
He noted that regular training programmes are conducted to equip farmers with updated knowledge of scientific fanning methods.
Speaking at the event, District Horticulture & Soil Conservation Officer Kh Malemnganba highlighted the department's efforts in training farmers on modem agriculture practices.
He also urged farmers to utilise opportunities such as free seed distribution offered by the department from time to time.
