Imphal, April 04 2026:
The Rongmei Naga Council Manipur (RNCM) has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand calling for his intervention to bring two reserved forest areas under the jurisdiction of Tamenglong district.
The Kaiphundai Reserved Forest extension and Oinamlong Reserved Forest extension, despite falling well within the jurisdiction of Tamenglong district, are placed under Jiribam Forest Division, asserted the RNCM.
The memorandum was submitted to Yumnam Khemchand during his maiden visit as Chief Minister to Leingangpokpi police outpost, Tatbung village, Tamenglong today.
Placing the Kaiphundai Reserved Forest extension and Oinamlong Reserved Forest extension under the Jiribam Forest Division is a matter of serious concern.
It is viewed as a serious Constitutional breach, posing a threat to the guaranteed right to ownership and possession of the land and resources of the indigenous hill people, under Article 371(C) of the Indian Constitution, said the RNCM.
Such an arrangement by the Govt hurts the sentiment of the people and it may bear serious implications, said the RNCM, appealing to the CM to intervene and bring the reserved forest areas under the jurisdiction of the Tamenglong Forest Division.
