New traffic rule hit sale proceeds in shops

Imphal, December 03 2011: Removal of parking lots from along the roadside of Paona and Thangal Bazar has reportedly hit the sale proceeds of the shops in the otherwise crowded Bazar area of Imphal.

Operation of private-run parking lots along the roadside of Paona and Thangal Bazar was allowed earlier and shoppers could park their vehicles while they go for shopping.

However, the Traffic Police have removed these parking lots to ease traffic congestion.

Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, some of the shop-keepers in Paona and Thangal Bazar have lamented that their daily sale records have gone down following removal of the parking lots.

Now the Police as well as the Traffic Police deployed in the Bazar area do not allow parking of vehicles even for a while for loading goods, thus creating problem to shoppers, more particularly, to those coming to make purchase of bulky items, the shop-keepers informed, adding that this has affected the sale proceeds in all the shops.

Even though removal of the parking lots may be essential to ease traffic congestion, vehicles should be allowed to park at least for a while for the shoppers to make their purchases and load them into their vehicles, the aggrieved shop-keepers pleaded.

On the other hand, DSP Victoria of Manipur Traffic Police has explained that the parking of two wheelers and four wheelers, which were previously allowed along the roadside of Paona and Thangal Bazar has been stopped taking into account the traffic congestion and the inconveniences caused to the commuters.

Now, a public parking lot, both for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, has been set up near the Family Welfare Department.

In addition to this, parking space for three and four wheelers has been provided behind Polo Ground, she pointed out.

The DSP appealed to all against parking their vehicles 'no parking area or zone' while coming for shopping in Paona and Thangal bazaar.

If at all the customers coming to make purchases need to park their vehicles in front of the shops, they should do it for a short while so as to avoid causing inconveniences to other commuters and passersby, the officer observed.
