Awareness programme on ''Scientific methods of Lac cultivation'' concludes

A 5-Days Farmers' Awareness Programme on "Scientific Methods of Lac Cultivation for Farmers' Additional Income" concluded today at the conference hall of College of Agriculture (CoA), Iroisemba, Central Agriculture University (CAU), Imphal.
The awareness programme was organised by AINP on Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources, CoA, CAU, Imphal under the sponsorship of National Institute of Secondary Agriculture, Namkum, Ranchi.
The closing function was graced by CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, Lamphelpat, Chief Scientist & Head of AcSIR, Dr Huidrom Birkumar Singh; Professor and PI of the Project, CoA, CAU, Imphal, Dr Kh Ibohal Singh; and Professor & HOD, BPME, CoA, CAU, Imphal, Dr Lokesh Kumar Mishra as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Kh Ibohal said that Lac cultivation has been booming in many States as the articles/items produced from it are in huge demand throughout the world.
"Due to its natural, nontoxic, biodegradable, eco-friendly nature, Lac has been in consistent demand in the market.
Lac is used in manufacturing toys, ornaments, electrical insulating materials, varnishes, polishes, shoe polishes, sealing wax, electric insulations, lamination of papers, etc", he added.
He continued that fanners could earn a huge profit by adopting the scientific methods of Lac cultivation as it requires only a minimal effort and cost.
Further, Prof Kh Ibohal shared that since 2014, a project titled 'Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources' had been initiated at CoA, CAU under ICAR-Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums (IINRG), Ranchi.
Notably, the 5-days programme was participated by 25 farmers each from Noney, Senapati, Chandel, Tamenglong and Ukhrul districts.
