Fisheries Director asserts to take up measures to enhance fish stocks in State

Bishnupur, July 27 2024: Fisheries Director Heisnam Balkrishna has asserted that the Government will take up a special measure within one year to enhance fish stocks and promote fishery products in Manipur.

The measure will aim at promoting the welfare of fish farmers in the State thereby making an alternative arrangement for the fish farmers during the breeding season of fishes, he said.

He was speaking at the Community Outreach and Extension Programme held at Thanga Houreng Chingyang Bazar Community hall today organised by Heisnam Athletic and Cultural Organisation (HACO) in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Govt of Manipur.

The programme was held on the theme "Sustainable Fishing, It is not a catch, It's a commitment".

Highlighting the multiple factors leading to decline in fish stocks in the State over the past few years, the Fisheries Director said that there has been considerable change in fish breeding practices such as catching of fishes at their developing stage and the high rate of fish foods in the State as compared to other States in the country.

He maintained that the Fisheries Department will analyze the several factors causing decline in fish stocks in the State and will take up measures accordingly to enhance fish stocks and fishery products in the State.

Steps will be taken up to promote the well-being of fish farmers in the State who are key contributors to aquaculture in the State, he said.

He went on to state that the fish farmers will be categorized on certain factors to streamline the process of achieving the aim of sustainable aquaculture and ensure that the fish farmers receive the benefits of various welfare schemes initiated by the Government.

Retired teacher from Thanga H Maipak; District Fisheries Officer Bishnupur E Rameshwor and Fisheries Inspector I Tombi also graced today's programme as the presidium members while District Fisheries Officer (DFO) Chandel Sapam Jiten attended as the resource person.
