Imphal, December 26 2012: As part of routine reviewing of welfare schemes for the minorities at remote areas, a team of Manipur State Minorities Commission on December 24 reportedly conducted field visits and spot verifications at Phailenthang village in Churachandpur district and Borobekra area of Jiribam sub division in Imphal East district.

Phailenthang, a small village located at a distance of about 30 kilometres from Jiribam Bazar on the way to Tipaimukh in Churachandpur, is found having acute shortages in infrastructure for educational institutions, medical and health facilities, public distribution systems etc, said a Commission statement issued by its Secretary Dr Md Raheij uddin Sheikh.

Informing that people of this village are found facing many hardships in proceeding through the officials who are sitting at the district headquarters at Churachandpur, the statement conveyed that as the Tipaimukh road is not in a condition for travelling, they (villagers) travel either by waterways through Tipaimukh or take the Imphal-Jiribam road and then by Imphal-Churachandpur road which consume at least two days travelling and some more days at the District HQs for any sort of Government related works.

The need for developing communication network needs top priority to redress grievances of the people, said the Commission.

With regard to the team's visit to Borobekra village in the Barak Circle of Jiribam and inspection of the condition of educational, economical and living standards of the people, the secretary said that lack of infrastructure of Borobekra High School, recently upgraded to the Higher Secondary status last year, was found to be the main problem along with shortage of manpower.

The Commission found only six teachers teaching upto the high school level, whereas there was no teacher for teaching English, Maths and Science Subjects.

No laboratory and science equipment was found.

One block of the building constructed under the RMSA Scheme is found almost completed but no furniture is provided so far, detailed Dr Sheikh.

While interacting with the team, the students drew special attention of the State Education Department to look into the acute shortages of the School as it is the only educational institution in the area where they could take basic education upto the XII standard otherwise they have to go to Assam crossing the Barak River or to drop out from pursuing higher education, added the Commission secretary.
