Imphal, September 24 2026: Reiterating the demand to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur with 1951 as the base year, five organisations viz AMUCO, MSF, PLMPAM, AMA-WOVA and CoHR, orga- nised a sit-in protest at National Games Village, Zone-II, today.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the protest, AMUCO president S Sanjoy said that the primary cause of the ongoing crisis in Manipur is the influx of illegal immigrants which poses a serious threat to the existence of the indigenous people.

He said the organisations have been urging the Centre and the State Government to update the NRC with 1951 as the base year, not recognise SIR 2026 as a valid document, rehabilitate internally displaced persons (IDPs), and repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, among other demands.

Sanjoy said that the five organisations would continue to stage different forms of protest until their demands are addressed.

Accusing the Government of India of working to undermine Manipuri society and pursuing divisive politics, he urged the Government to stop such alleged activities and resolve the ongoing crisis.
