Thoubal, August 23 2026:
Residents, local clubs, organisations, Meira Paibis and the Auto-Iris Drivers' Association from Ingourok, Shikhong, Sekmai, Hijam Khunou, Ukhongshang, Lourembam, Langmeithel, Pechi and Bengi on Sunday staged a sit-in protest demanding the immediate repair of two severely dilapidated road stretches under Heirok Assembly Constituency in Thoubal district.
The protesters demanded repair of the Shikhong-Nongpok Sekmai Charangpat road leading towards Thoubal and the Shikhong-Nongpok Sekmai-Pechi road connecting the area with Yairipok Keithel.
The protest was staged starting early in the morning at Pechi Chinglak intersection, where the demonstrators expressed concern over the poor condition of the roads, stating that commuters have been facing severe inconvenience for a long time.
They warned that if the concerned authorities, including the local MLA and the Government, fail to take up repair works within seven days, the people would be compelled to close the road stretches.
Speaking at the protest, a Meira Paibi leader said that the roads connecting Ingourok with Yairipok and those leading towards Bengi Ichamkhunou have deteriorated badly, causing immense hardship to the public.
She said the poor condition of the roads has particularly affected daily commuters, students and parents travelling to drop off and pick up their children from schools.
Frequent accidents on the damaged roads have also reportedly resulted in casualties, she added.
The protesters urged the concerned departments and the local MLA to take up immediate repair works, warning that the villagers, along with local clubs, organisations and Meira Paibis, would be compelled to launch a road closure agitation if their demands were not met within the stipulated time.
