Dr T Meinya urges Government to focus on rehabilitation and highway reopening

Imphal, February 18 2026: The 8th Foundation Day celebration of the Old Age Home in Langjing Achouba, Imphal West district, held today at the home's auditorium, became a platform for political and social commentary as former Lok Sabha MP, Dr Thokchom Meinya Singh, addressed pressing issues facing Manipur.

Dr Meinya, who attended as the chief guest, emphasized that the immediate priority for the current Government should be the rehabilitation of thousands displaced by the Kuki-Meitei conflict that erupted on May 3, 2023.He stressed the need to return these individuals from relief camps to their homes and swiftly bring an end to the ongoing unrest to restore peace in the region.

Furthermore, Dr Meinya called upon the Government to immediately lift the prolonged blockade of the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway, a vital link for the State.

He highlighted that the current reliance solely on air travel for the valley population's movement is severely impacting the state's economy, urging the government to implement policies and programs to improve the economic situation.

The event was presided over by the home's president, Dr Mayengbam Kamala Devi.

Other dignitaries present included chief advisor RK Maipaksana, former Chairperson of the Manipur State Social Welfare Board Dr RK Nayansana Devi, Langjing Gram Panchayat Chairperson Sorokhaibam Sijust, and Associate Professor & Head of the Department of Chemistry at DM University, K Sanaton Sharma.

Speaking on the occasion, Rakesh Naorem, an advisory board member of the home, revealed that the Old Age Home has yet to receive any Government grants but continues to operate through the support of managing committee members, advisory board members, sympathizers, and public donations.

He mentioned that the home is currently working on constructing a library room for the convenience of its residents and visitors.

The main building structure itself was built with significant assistance from former MP Dr Thokchom Meinya.

As part of the day's events, about 25 elderly women residing at the home were presented with traditional Manipuri shawls and food items, followed by a community feast.
