Imphal, April 15: For the first time in Manipur, a diesel operated incinerator having the capacity of disposing/recycling of biomedical waste at the rate of 25 kg per hour has been installed in the Waste Management Unit of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute here from today.

The installation ceremony was attended by Chairman of Manipur Pollution Control Board MLA E Dwijamani Singh as chief guest, Environmentalist of the Board N Minaketan as guest of honour and Chairman of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute Dr Kh Palin as functional president.

In connection with installation of the incinerator which has started operation from today, Superintendent of Shija Hospitals Dr Jugindro observed that proper management and recycling of bio-medical waste is the first and foremost duty and responsibility of an efficient hospital.

This will also ensure quality health care to the people apart from conforming to the laid down norms of Supreme Court and the Pollution Control Board.

Installed at an estimated cost of Rs 36 lakhs, the incinerator would help in disposing the bio-medical waste generated in Shija Hospitals, Dr Jugindro said, adding that installation of such an incinerator is one of the significant achievements of the pioneering health care institute.

E Dwijamani appreciated the staff and management of Shija Hospital on installation of the incinerator for the first time in Manipur and reiterated that proper disposal, utilisation and recycling of bio-medical waste is the most important duty of a hospital.

In his presidential address, Dr Palin said that installation of a diesel operated incinerator having the capacity of disposing of bio-medical waste at the rate of 25 kg per hour for the first time in Manipur at Shija Hospitals has been made possible with the dedication of the staff and the support and cooperation of the people.

While pointing out that people can availed loan facilities for purchasing any commodities or for construction of a house but it is not so in case of medical treatment, Dr Palin announced that Shija Hospitals would be tying up with UNACO to extend health loan to the needy people.
