Training on soil fertility enhancement held at Salemthar

Thoubal, February 13 2026: With an aim to promote sustainable hill agriculture and empower tribal fanners, a training-cum-input distribution programme titled "Soil Fertility Enhancement Through Simple Measures" was organised on Friday at Salemthar village, Chandel.

Addressing the gathering, resource person Dr Kangjam Sonamani Singh, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil & Water Conservation), highlighted that soil fertility enhancement should centre on building organic matter, encouraging beneficial soil life, and protecting the soil structure.

He emphasised that such methods are sustainable, often low-cost, and improve long-term productivity.

He stressed that adding compost or vermicompost is the most effective way to introduce nutrients, improve soil structure, and increase water retention.

The use of well-decomposed animal manure, such as poultry and dairy manure, was also recommended for enriching nutrients and boosting microbial activity in the soil.

The resource person also spoke on the benefits of crop rotation and mixed cropping to break pest cycles, balance nutrient use and prevent soil erosion.

Planting cover crops, particularly legumes, during the off-season was recommended as an effective method to prevent soil erosion, reduce compaction and enhance soil nutrients.

He stated that sincere and consistent efforts toward soil fertility enhancement would significantly contribute to prosperity and self-sufficiency in and around the village.

Among those present at the programme were Dr A Ameeta Devi, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Chandel; Dr Kl Levish, SMS (Agronomy); Super Kamei, Assistant (Farm Management), KVK Chandel; and Hb Stephen; Chief of Salemthar village.

As part of the programme, seeds of pumpkin, cucumber and beans were distributed to the participants.

The programme witnessed an enthusiastic turnout of village chief, local elders and the local youths.
