Imphal, January 10 2009: IN CONTINUATION with the series of developmental projects being taken up by the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government, one gymkhana cum sports complex will be constructed in every block of the nine districts.

The good news was announced by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister, N Biren today at the 20th general conference of the Paomai Students' Union held at the mini indoor stadium of Senapati district headquarter.

Minister Biren, who was the chief guest in the function, said that in the first phase, one gymkhana cum sports complex will be constructed in each of 80 blocks at the cost of Rs 50 lakh each.

The project is being taken up under Special Plan Assistance (SPA) .

He also announced that the vacancies of 1,700 teachers will be filled up very soon.

The government is making necessary arrangements to appoint the teachers soon.

Preference will be given to candidates of their respective districts.

The state cabinet has also decided to empower the district councils.

The announcement that the district councils are empowered is only to be made, he said.

YAS Minister, Biren further said that the SPF government led by Chief Minister O Ibobi is a government that keeps its promises.

The improvement of roads and bridges, construction of water supply schemes and changes that have come about in the health care during the past four/five years are there for all to see.

He further said, the construction of a sports complex at Purul at the cost of Rs 60 lakh is being taken up under the NEC.

He expressed unhappiness that due to controversy over land regarding the construction of sports complex at Mayangkhang of which foundation stone was laid last year by Chief Minister O Ibobi, no progress has been made so far.

Meanwhile, the sports complex at Chandel of which construction began at the same time with that of Mayangkhang has made a lot of progress, he said.

Tribal Development Minister, DD Thaisii who presided over the funcion said that people of the district ought to appreciate the government for constructing such sports complexes which will encourage the aspiring young sports persons.

If the sports complexes are completed, the sports persons of the district can compete in various games and sports at state level and national level.

Officials of Youth Affairs and Sports Department including its director accompanied the Ministers.
