DESAM raises suspicion of smuggling network

Imphal, August 06 2026: Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has expressed suspicion of an illegal network and cartel operating in the airway following the seizure of a large consignment of Indian Made Foreign Liquor from Imphal Airport.

In a statement, DESAM questioned what airport officials and security personnel were doing when 519 bottles of IMFL were brought from Delhi to Imphal.

A passenger can carry up to five litres of liquor on a flight, it said, adding that the transportation of 519 bottles by some individuals, however, is far beyond the permissible consumption limit.

If fragile items like liquor bottles could be transported through airways so easily in such a large quantity, how easy would it be to smuggle psychoactive substances such as heroin, brown sugar, ganja etc which are considerably smaller in size but far more profitable and expensive? it asked.

Even human trafficking could take place through airways given the way the situation has unfolded at the airport, DESAM said.

DESAM, meanwhile, said that some people were trying to mislead the student organisation over the seizure of the IMFL .

Claiming that DESAM is committed to the welfare of society, the statement added that the organisation received information about the illegal transportation of liquor at the airport from people who had faith in it.

DESAM works with integrity, but the illogical reactions of some individuals over the seizure of liquor were astonishing, it further claimed.

However, DESAM would not be discouraged by such reactions from continuing its work for the State, it added.
