Imphal, September 05 2016: The total number of electricity consumer in the State is 2,80,783 including 2,64,101 domestic consumers.

The peak power demand of the State is 167 MW.

All the requirements of the State are bought from Central Sector/State Sector Generations.

In order to supply the ever increasing demand of power to all sections of consumers in the State, infrastructure for transmission and distribution of electricity have been upgrading and expanding continuously.

Earlier, there were no major schemes regarding Distribution Sector in the State.

Distribution Sector was mainly supported by State plan funds while most of the Plans centered to the construction of 132/33 or 33/11 KV S/S & stringing of 132 KV & 33 KV Lines.

At present, out of a total installed capacity of 2054 MW in the North East Region, 182 MW is currently being allocated to Manipur State (about 8.88%) of which 99 MW is from Hydel projects and 83 MW is from Thermal projects.

The requirement of power in the State for the year 2015-16 was 1080 MU.

But the actual availability of power in the State is 818MU.The gap between the demand and supply was bridged from Banked Energy and Trading of energy through Indian Energy Exchange (IEX).

The per capita energy consumption of Manipur as on March 2016 is 290 KWH.

Today, distribution sector, MSPDCL (Manipur State Power Development Company Limited) has total 11 KV overhead line at the length of 5651.19 kms and the total 11 KV underground cable laid is 59.02 kms with 4513 of distribution transformers and total installed capacity of 321.356 MW.

Also, LT distribution network in the State expanded tremendously including 1316.769 kms of AB cable.

Under APDRP (Accelerated Power Development and the Reforms Programme) scheme, 11KV underground XLPE cable & AB cable (LT) was introduced for the first time in Manipur in and around market areas.

The shabby overhead 11KV Lines & LT (low-tension) Lines in the market areas of Imphal were cleared.

Supported by the State plan fund, 14000 Pre-Payment Electronic Energy Meters were also introduced at the consumer's premises in the Imphal Bazar areas during 2012-2013 .

This was the first test and successful venture of EDM for installation of pre-payment energy meter with AB cable, resulting multiplication in revenue realisation and huge saving of energy at the same time.

There are 2582 villages in the State as per Census 2011 issued by the Director of Census Operations, Manipur.

Out of this, total electrified village is 2259.Out of 323 un-electrified villages, 201 villages are included in the scheme, RGGVY-XIIth Plan which is targeted to complete electrification work by May 2017 .

Ministry of Power (MoP), Government of India has launched Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) which aims at achieving the targeted AT&C (Aggregate technical & Commercial) loss reduction trajectory and providing 24�7 power to all States in the country.

The details of scope of works covered under the scheme relating to strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution system including provisioning of solar panels, metering of distribution transformers/feeders/consumers in the urban areas and IT enablement of distribution sector.

As per Census 2011, 28 towns of Manipur are eligible under IPDS.

However, MSPDCL has considered 12 towns only and Detailed Project Report (DPRs) for the 12 towns viz Imphal, Lamsang, Wangoi, Wangjing, Yairipok, Sugnu, Heirok, Jiribam, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, Kangpokpi, Sekmai was submitted to Power Finance Corporation Ltd (PFC Ltd) for approval of the same.

Electricity is an essential item in our day to day life.

As Manipur has no sizable generation of its own, all electricity is bought from Central sector undertaking other State Governments and private companies.

Availability of reliable, quality and affordable 24X7 power for all by 2018 depend on joint initiative of the Central Government, State Government, utility and the consumers.

Detection and disconnection of unauthorized consumers and spot collection of revenue is in full swing.

Installation of about 2.2 lakh electronic energy meters (Prepayment & Postpaid Energy Meters) are being taken up.

The outstanding dues owed to different Government Departments have been collected.

Clearance of electricity consumption dues has been made mandatory before issuing certificates etc by the Deputy Commissioners.

For realization of arrears from the consumers who are Government employees, production of No-due Certificate in respect of electricity charges for preparation of their pay bills has been made mandatory.
