Imphal, August 05 2026:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute has become the first hospital in Manipur to integrate the Breakpoint-to-MIC Quotient (BMQ) into its bacterial culture and antibiotic susceptibility reports, marking a major advancement in patient care and antimicrobial stewardship.
Since June 2023, the Department of Microbiology has been routinely providing BMQ-based reporting for critically ill patients at no additional cost.
The BMQ is a derived interpretive parameter that helps doctors choose antibiotics more precisely, leading to better treatment outcomes and improved patient safety.
In a release, Hospital authorities said the inclusion of BMQ values represents a significant step forward in quality healthcare and the rational use of antibiotics.
It supports evidence-based treatment and contributes to the global effort to combat antimicrobial resistance.
The initiative was pioneered by Dr Yumlembam Bishwabati Devi, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, under the guidance of Dr Khumanthem Sulochana Devi, Professor and former Head of the Department, whose vision laid the foundation for the advanced reporting system in the State.
The achievement was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the entire Microbiology team.
