Sticking to their firm stand as spelled out in the ultimatum served earlier, the students union of Pettigrew College (SUPC) has closed down the college indefinitely since 30th of Aug'06.Talking with this correspondent, P.A.Steward, general secretary, SUPC stated that despite repeated memoranda and ultimatum served to the concern authority it pay no heed to the genuine and legitimate demands, so as a first phase of agitation the students are constrained to closed-down the lone Government college of the District, even after these steps the state government continue their step motherly treatment towards the pragmatic approach and democratic activities, the students will be compelled to take a strategic steps.
The students body also comes down strongly on the Education Minister for his false and empty promises made on the other day to send six lecturers to Pettrigrew College.
Those retracted lecturers are, Kh.Imo Singh, Lecturer in Chemistry, Imphal College, Imphal, Dr..LSanahal Singh, Lecturer in Chemistry, Y.K.College Wangjing, Th.Ibotombi Singh, Lecturer in Physic, DMC of Science, Imphal, P.Birachandra Singh, Lecturer in English, Thoubal College, A.Basanta Sharma, Lecturer in Political Science, Ideal Girls' College, Akhampat and K.Azad Singh, Lecturer in Mathematics, Moirang College.
Meanwhile, the HKL (Ukhrul Students Union), president and his colleague said that the Unionhave pledged support and full co-operation to the ongoing agitation initiated by the SUPC for their legitimate demands till all the demands were met.
The students charter of demands include three Lecturers in English Department., two each in Chemistry, Zoology, Physic, one each in Botany and Mathematics, posting of Librarian, creation of Head Clerk post with immediate posting, extension of water pipeline up to college and construction of water storage tanks, Black topping of college approach roads, construction of college boundary fencing wall, repairing of Girls Hostel, repairing of class rooms, construction of an Auditorium and construction of college main gate.
