State of Sagolmang CHC leaves PUYA peeved

Imphal, June 29 2026: Envisioned to be upgraded to a district hospital, the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Sagolmang in Imphal East district is currently grappling with severe infrastructural deficiencies and a shortage of medical personnel, raising concerns over the quality of healthcare services available to residents.

On December 16, 2011, the foundation stone for the upgradation of CHC Sagolmang to the Imphal East district hospital was laid with the aim of strengthening healthcare facilities in the area.

However, nearly 15 years later, the health centre continues to struggle with inadequate manpower.

Moreover, the CHC building is in a poor condition, with rainwater leaking through the roof in almost every section during the monsoon season.

According to the People's United Youth Alliance (PUYA), which inspected the CHC today, the healthcare facility has only nine doctors, five nurses and three Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), who work on a roster basis.

The Alliance stated that of the nine doctors currently serving at the CHC, three are on contractual appointments.

Speaking to the media, PUYA president Namei-rakpam Romesh said that the condition of the CHC building they witnessed during their visit today was disheartening.

Noting that over 100 people visit the healthcare centre every day for treatment, he asked how the facility is being managed with limited medical staff.

Sagolmang is one of the worst-affected areas in the ongoing conflict, he said and added that PUYA takes the issue very seriously.

Romesh also said that most parts of the building's roof are leaking.

He also said that water was found accumulating in the X-ray room, while the CHC's ultrasound machine is outdated.

Allowing the CHC to remain in such a condition reflects the Government's negligence, he asserted.

Claiming that most of the medicines at the CHC were found to be near their expiry dates, he urged the Government to look into the matter and ensure that the CHC is properly equipped to provide adequate healthcare services.

He also said that the PUYA team inspected the Lamlai Primary Health Centre (PHC) .

During the inspection, he said the team found that only one doctor and one nurse were on duty, despite nine doctors, five staff nurses and six ANMs being posted there.

He further alleged that the delivery bed at the PHC was found broken and tied with ropes as a makeshift arrangement.

He urged the Health Directorate to procure a new delivery bed for the PHC and send the excess ANMs to another CHC or PHC .
