Kangpokpi, March 29 2026: Joining Christians worldwide, Palm Sunday was observed across Kangpokpi district on Sunday with deep religious fervour and gaiety, marking the beginning of the Holy Week and rekindling hope among thousands of displaced families.

Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, Willow Sunday and Flower Sunday, commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, an event symbolising humility, peace and the fulfilment of prophecy.

The day holds profound theological significance as it ushers in the Holy Week - the most sacred period in the Christian calendar leading up to Easter Sunday, celebrating the resurrection of Christ.

Churches across the district witnessed large congregations from early morning, as special devotion services, scripture readings and offerings were held.

Gospel sermons centred on the theme of the "Triumphal Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem" were delivered by church leaders, urging believers to reflect on the values of sacrifice, faith and redemption.

In Kangpokpi town, the atmosphere turned vibrant and spiritually uplifting as the harmonious chanting of "Hosannah" echoed through the streets.

Congregants gathered in large numbers to observe the occasion with prayers and processions.

Following the morning worship services, various churches, including KCC, KBC, KIBC, CRC, and other churches in town, organised colourful Palm Sunday processions.

Men and women, youth and children carrying palm branches marched through the town, chanting "Hosannah, Hosannah, Hosannah to the Son of David," and "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord," recreating the biblical scene of Christ's entry into Jerusalem.

The processions passed along the busy National Highway-2 and other major routes, with devotional songs and chants reverberating across localities, drawing participation and attention from residents.

Beyond its religious observance, this year's Palm Sunday also carried an emotional undertone for many in the Kuki-Zo community.

Amid ongoing displacement and hardship, the celebrations became a moment of collective prayer and hope for restoration, peace and eventual return to their ancestral homes.

The occasion serves as a solemn reminder of the final days of Christ's earthly life - from His triumphant welcome in Jerusalem to His crucifixion and ultimate resurrection - embodying themes of suffering, perseverance and victory over death.

As the Holy Week begins, Christians across the state are expected to engage in a series of religious observances culminating in Good Friday and Easter Sunday, reaffirming their faith and devotion.
