Thoubal, August 28 2026:
Locals of Lilong have warned the Government and the PHED of democratic agitation for failing to lay pipes and supply drinking water since 2021.In a meeting held at the Lilong Jama Masjid complex, members of the JAC Against Non Supply of Drinking Water, Lilong Bazar to Usoipokpi said that water pipes were removed from the area in 2021 on account of widening of the National Highway.
While the PHED, in a meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal on March 11, had assured the JAC to provide water supply to the locals by April 30, no steps have been taken up to fulfil the assurance till today, said the JAC members.
The JAC members further alleged that while some PHED staff were taking Rs 5000 for a tap water connection, some were even demanding as high as Rs 10,000 for a tap water connection.
Those who can't afford have not been given any water connection, added the JAC members.
Seeking action against the erring staff, the JAC said that the Government and the PHED must take immediate steps to lay pipes wherever necessary and provide tap water connections to the locals of Lilong Keithel to Usoipokpi by September 5.If no steps are taken by the given time, the JAC along with the locals may launch democratic agitation, it said.
It asserted that complaints against the erring officials of the PHED will also be filed with relevant authorities.
