Mass rallies in Sangaiyumpham, Phundrei demand removal of non-Muslim members from Waqf Board

Thoubal, August 23 2026: The United Development Committee (UDC), Sangaiyumpham on Sunday organised a mass rally at Sangaiyumpham, demanding the immediate removal of two non-Muslim members from the 8th Waqf Board Committee.

The rally began simultaneously from Sangaiyumpham Part-I Salam Macha and Sangaiyumpham Part-II Moirang Palli Bazar before converging at Sangaiyumpham Idgah Maidan, where the programme concluded with a prayer.

Protesters carried placards bearing inscriptions such as "Waqf Board is for Muslims", "Masjid, Madrassa, Kabarstan and Idigah are for Muslims", "We condemn inclusion of two non-Muslims in Waqf Board" and "Remove non-Muslims from Waqf Board".

Similar slogans were also raised during the rally.

Speaking in connection with the protest, Moulana Ataur Rahaman, chairman of the Joint Committee Against the Inclusion of Non-Muslim Members in the 8th Waqf Board, Manipur, said the inclusion of two non-Muslim members in the Waqf Board, which he said is meant for matters concerning the Muslim community, was unacceptable.

He alleged that the move could create division and disharmony among communities and urged the Manipur Government to respect the sentiments of the people and remove the two members from the committee at the earliest.

Meanwhile, another protest rally was organised at Phundrei in Thoubal district by Anjuman Islahi Bashar Phundrei, Jamiatul Ulama Phundrei and Phundrei Village under the initiative of the Joint Committee Against the Inclusion of Non-Muslim Members in the 8th Waqf Board.

The protesters held placards reading "We condemn inclusion of nonMuslims in Waqf Board", "Waqf Board is for Muslims" and "Remove nonMuslims from Waqf Board", while raising similar slogans.

Taking part in the protest, JCAINMM-WB Manipur treasurer BM Farid described the inclusion of nonMuslims in the constitution of the Waqf Board as unreasonable and demanded their immediate removal by the Government.

Comment
