Imphal, August 23 2019: The United Women Organisation Tamenglong (UWOT) has strongly condemned the use of force against the peaceful protesters who were demanding justice in the suspicious death of Chungamliu Riamei, by the State police which resulted in many sustaining serious injuries.

A press release issued by the president of UWOT today alleged that the use of force against the peaceful protesters, is a clear violation and an attempt to suppress tribal rights by the State Government instead of ensuring justice to the deceased.

Expressing concern over the rapid rise of violence against women in the State as well as the inept handling of such cases by the State Government, including the recent mysterious death of Ningthoujam Babysana who was found hung to death inside the hostel of Standard Robarth Hr Secondary School (Canchipur), the association demanded an immediate, impartial and thorough investigation in the death of both Chungamliu Riamei and Babysana and to identify and book all the people involved in the two cases.

It further demanded the State Government to immediately suspend all police personnel involved in using force against the peaceful protesters and to award exemplary punishments as per the law of the land to the guilty persons.

The organisation demanded the Government to refrain from using arms or forces against the peaceful protesters demanding justice and to compensate the medical expenses of the victims.

It then urged the State Government to devise effective means and mechanism to prevent all forms of violence against women and children in the future and extended solidarity to the JACs of late Riamei and late Babysana.

On the other hand, Committee on Human Rights (COHR), Manipur, has also strongly condemned the mysterious death of Chungamliu Riamei and the following police brutality against the peaceful protesters who were demanding justice for the deceased.

A statement issued by the publicity secretary of COHR Manipur today demanded the Government to take up immediate disciplinary action against the police personnel involved in using tear gas, smoke bombs, mock bombs and rubber bullets etc and to ensure such incidents do not happen in the future.

It further demanded the Government to solve the case at the earliest instead of waiting for violence and agitation from the people.
