Thoubal, June 22 2026:
As part of the Statewide protest launched by employees of the Manipur State Government and pensioners over various demands, the Thoubal District State Pensioners' Union staged a sit-in protest at Thoubal Athokpam Keithel on Monday.
Speaking on the sideline of the protest, Thoubal District State Pensioners' Union president Binodkumar Likmabam said the protest was organised against the failure of the Government to take necessary action on the demands raised by State Government employees and pensioners despite submission of a memorandum.
He stated that the Dearness Allowance/Deamess Relief (DA/DR) for State Government employees currently stands at 42 per cent, while Central Government employees receive 60 per cent, resulting in an 18 per cent disparity.
He termed the gap a setback for State employees and demanded that the DA/DR of State Government employees be brought at par with their Central counterparts.
The pensioners' body also demanded implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, restoration of the old pension system, and an end to reengagement of retired employees.
Other demands included the continuation of Saturday as a holiday and restoration of peace and normalcy in the State at the earliest.
The Union further urged the Government to increase the medical allowance of pensioners from the existing Rs 1,000 to at least Rs 3,000-Rs 5,000, stating that the present amount is inadequate to meet medical expenses and has become outdated in view of the rising cost of healthcare.
