Imphal, November 17 2008: IN A shocking incident a junior sub-editor of the Imphal Free Press, a daily English newspaper based in Imphal, was found murdered with multiple bullet marks on the body at about 4:30 on Monday evening at Sangai Second Home, Langol in Imphal West.

The victim's hands were tied behind, he was blind-folded and his mouth was gagged with a piece of cloth when the corpse was found.

The victim, identified as Konsam Rishikanta @ Naoba (21) son of K Budhi and Konsam Ongbi Ibecha of Ningomthong Sairom Leirak in Thongju AC, worked as a 'Junior Sub Editor' with the Imphal Free Press.

According to reports, the body of the victim sustained multiple bullet marks on the throat and abdomen.

However, it is not known who were behind the murder and how he was brought and shot him dead there.

No individual or group has made any claims regarding the incident so far.

According to family sources, Nanao left home in the morning around 10 to collect his dues from the City Offset Press located at Babupara where he used to work in the morning shift till a few days back.

But he never returned till his dead body was found.

When his younger sister called him on his mobile phone around 4 p.m., the phone rang but got no reply.

Then when she called again at about 5 p.m., the phone remained switched off.

The phone was not found at the site either where his dead body was recovered.

Meanwhile, residents of his locality organised an emergency public meeting at Sairom Leirak tonight where they expressed shock and grief over the killing of such a young and innocent boy.

The residents discussed formation of a JAC against the killing.

From tomorrow, the JAC is expected to launch an intense protest agitation.

On the other hand, an emergency meeting of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors was held at the Manipur Press Club in the late evening.

The meeting strongly condemned the merciless killing of a young newspaper employee and took it as a violation of the local code of conduct of the journalists which had been widely published and given assent to by various armed and un-armed organisations expressing pledge that they would abide by the local code of conduct.

The local code of conduct consists of a particular reference in which all armed and un-armed groups and government authorities are urged to first contact and inform the journalists' body in the event of any grievances that they may happen to have against an individual journalist or a media organisation so that the journalists' body itself would take up the matter with the concerned journalist or the media organisation and do the needful.

The AMWJU and the Editors demanded an immediate clarification from the concerned group who committed today's crime.
