Imphal, December 15 2025:
Threatening to lay down arms, Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel have urged the Government to meet their demands by December 23.The VDF personnel have been demanding the Government to implement Section 18 of the Police Act, regularisation and provisions for pay increment.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today, Sagolsem Sanjit, president of the Central Committee of All Manipur VDF Association District 16, said the decision to lay down arms was taken in a meeting of the committee.
He said VDF personnel have launched and staged multiple stirs in the past to draw the attention of the Government to their demands.
On May 18, 2025, the representatives of the VDF met with the Commissioner (Home) and other authorities of the Government.
During the meeting, the Commissioner (Home) gave assurance to act on the demands, and as a result, the VDF personnel suspended their stir and waited, he said.
The Government still did not act and later it gave another assurance to form a committee to look into the demands of the VDF, he added.
Months have passed, but the Government has not taken up any visible action to act on its assurances, Sanjit said.
The VDF personnel have been crucial to maintaining the law and order situation in Manipur.
They have been functioning like a regular police force, and deployed in sensitive areas amid the violent conflict since May 3, 2023, he said.
If the demands are not met by December 23, the VDF personnel may be forced to lay down arms and launch intense agitation, he said.
