The three day regional seminar organised by the Action for Women and Rural Development (AWARD) under the theme "The Emerging Challenges and Perspectives of Women Empowerment, Peace and Governance in the 21st Century" adopted a 7 point resolution to promote the political empowerment of women.
After minutely discussing many aspects, the seminar held from September 10 to 13 resolved to sensitize and press the authority concerned to the urgent need for implementing the resolution of the seminar for a healthier society, said a statement issued by AWARD.
The other resolutions include, to urge the Govt to ensure proper functioning of the PDS system, to urge the Govt that local resource persons who are aware of the grassroots realities are compulsory participants in the planning process of the State, to urge the Government to develop and implement programme and policies to create gender awareness at the grass root level, to urge Parliament to pass the proposed Bill for 33 pc reservation of seats for women in the coming Parliament/Winter session, to urge the State Government to work towards reservation of seats for women in the State Assembly for the coming Assembly elections and to urge the Government to include women leaders, social workers etc while formulating development plans.
The resolutions were adopted after three days of deliberations at the State Guest House which was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister Ph Parijat.
Addressing the inaugural function, Parijat stressed on the importance of ensuring political empowerment of women.
The seminar also touched on a number of issues pertaining to empowerment of women and agreed that there is a need to the draw the attention of the Govt and the authority concerned towards the fulfilment of equality and empowerment of women, both economic and political.
A five point recommendation was also drawn up after the seminar which include, reviewing the present PDS system, planning process be initiated from below, to correct gender imbalance, policies and programmes to bring about greater participation of women at the law making level etc.
