KCP-Apunba calls shutdown

Imphal, August 12 2026: The Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP)-Apunba has called for a 24-hour total shutdown across Manipur on August 15, boycotting India's Independence Day observance.

In a press note, the outfit said that the shutdown will come into effect from midnight of August 14 .

Emergencies and religious activities would be exempted from the purview of the shutdown.

It, meanwhile, stated that August 13 is observed as Patriots' Day in Manipur in commemoration of those who fought against the British during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 .

The outfit appealed to the people to pay tribute to the patriots by visiting their memorials.

Manipur regained its independence from British rule on August 14, 1947, it added.

Manipur was subsequently merged with India on September 21, 1949, it said and claimed that the Indian Government , however, has been subjecting people of Manipur to various forms of hardship, repression and human rights violations following the merger.

Referring to the conflict that began on May 3, 2023, the outfit alleged that the Government of India has been scheming to create enmity among the indigenous people by using "narco-terrorist" elements.

Stating that unity is essential to regain the independence of the erstwhile kingdom, the outfit appealed to all indigenous people to stand together and work towards safeguarding the interests and future of Manipur.
