DESAM shuts COA Dean's office

Demanding the Dean of College of Agriculture, Iroishemba to vacate her post, the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has locked the Dean's office today.
The student body has accused the Dean of the COA, Indira Sarangthem, of holding the post against rules of the Central Agricultural University (CAU) .
Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei, president of DESAM said according to the Act and Statutes of the university, "The Dean shall hold the office for a term of five years and shall be eligible for re-appointment provided that a Dean on attaining the age of sixty five years shall cease to hold office" .

Speaking to reporters, the student leader claimed that Indira Sarangthem has been given the charge of the Dean and Director of Instruction even though she has attained the age of 65 years.
On July 31, 2024, the Registrar of the CAU had issued an order allowing her to retire from the office of the Dean, Somorjit claimed.
When DESAM has earlier registered its objection to Professor Indira Sarangthem's appointment as the Dean and Director of Instruction, the university's Registrar is known to have issued a clarification recently through newspapers that the appointment was made in line with the Act and statutes of the varsity.
This is an attempt to cause confusion and hide the apparent "violation" of the rules, Somorjit alleged.
The Professor's appointment as the Dean and Director of Instruction other than re-employing her as a teacher is clearly against the rules.
The office of the Dean of COA will remain shut until a new Dean and Director of Instruction is appointed as per the Act and statutes of the university, Somorjit added.
