Imphal, August 10 2025:
A 1-day discourse cum awareness programme on the theme, "Role of Youths in Sustaining Agriculture" was held today at Konthoujam Kangjeibung Community Hall, Imphal.
The programme was organised by All Manipur Progressive Farmers' Association in collaboration with Arambai Tengol Unit-14 .
The programme was graced by dignitaries, including Peter Salam, Director of Agriculture, Manipur; K Devadutta Sharma, Director of Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Manipur; Prof Indira Sarangthem, Dean, College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal; and K Thoiba Meetei, president, All Manpur Progressive Farmers' Association.
Dr Nabachandra, HoD, Agronomy, CAU, Imphal; and Kh Nimaichand, Nodal Officer, MOVCDNER, Department of Agriculture, Manipur also attended the programme as resource persons.
Speaking on the occasion, Peter Salam called on the farmers to adopt double cropping, which involves planting two crops in the same field within a single year, to significantly increase food production.
"In Manipur, while approximately 1.95 lakh hectares of land are suitable for agriculture, double cropping is only practiced on a small fraction, about 5,000 hectares.
This discrepancy highlights a significant underutilization of the State's arable land for food production", said Peter Salam.
He asserted that to effectively promote double cropping and shift farmers' mindsets, a multi-pronged approach is needed, focusing on education, demonstration, and addressing potential barriers.
"This includes highlighting the economic and environmental benefits, showcasing successful examples, and providing tailored support to overcome challenges", he added.
He also mentioned that the Department is planning to launch a campaign to promote the cultivation of Chak-Hao, which is experiencing a surge in popularity and demand due to its unique flavor, nutritional profile, and growing awareness of its health benefits.
"Adopting double cropping with Chak-Hao can be a beneficial practice for farmers, potentially increasing revenue and improving land use efficiency", he added.
Furthermore, Peter Salam encouraged all the farmers to visit the Department to know more about the campaign and schemes initiated by the Government for the welfare of the farmers.
