Students lock Edn (U) office

Imphal, March 09 2016: Peeved over the Government's lackadaisical attitude towards their demands, students of Thoubal College today locked the office of Directorate of Education (U) today.

A large number of stu- dents of the college came to Imphal at around noon and stormed the office complex.

They shouted slogans against the Government apa- thy and asked all the employees to move outside the office complex.

Later, the irate students locked the main entrance gate as well as all the rooms in- cluding the office chamber of Director C Arthur protesting Government's indifferent atti- tude.

Later, a police team led by Imphal West Additional SP (Law and Order) Dr S Ibomcha brought the situation under control and opened the office complex.

Thoubal College Students' Union general secretary Oinam Arjun said that the Government has failed to look into the infrastructure and manpower inadequacies of the college although they have been repeatedly re- quested by the students.

He said that although Zo- ology Department of the college requires five teachers, the college has only two teachers.

Immoral activities are go- ing on inside the campus at night as the college has no fencing, he said and added that the college hostel is also yet to be inaugurated.

Moreover, the coeduca- tional college has no separate toilets for girls and boys, he said.

Arjun said that although construction of the college swimming pool had com- pleted some years back, the authority concerned has not inaugurated it till date for rea- sons best known to them As such, the swimming pool which was constructed with a huge sum of money is not serving its purpose, he said.

After memoranda were submitted to the Chief Minister, Education Minister and Education (U) Director on many occasions regarding the matter, the students began their protest in February this year.

However, the Government overlooked the students' de- mands completely, he said.

The students came to Imphal and locked the office of the Education (U) Directorate today as the Government remained unmoved even after yesterday's class boycott agitation, Arjun said.
