Underlining the importance of youth in bringing about social change, a two-day State level convention has kicked off from today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Sanglen.
The inaugural function of the convention was attended by Padmashree MK Binodini Devi as chief guest, former Minister and chief advisor of the convention Dr M Nara Singh as president and Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women Dr Ch Jamini Devi as guest of honour.
The president of Senior Citizens' Society of Manipur N Binoy Singh and secretary of Mass Educator Sh Kumar Singh were also present at the occasion as special guests.
Delivering the key note address, Napoleon Asem explained that the main objective of the convention is to bring about a revolutionary change in Manipuri society through the united force of the new generation youth.
Highlighting the ills afflicting the Manipuri society today, he said that in order to create a proper environment for growth and development involvement of youths is very much essential.
In her address, Dr Jamini observed that youth are the hope of future and peace can prevail in the society only through the involvement of the youth.
She also called upon the congregation to choose work culture instead of gun culture.
Binoy exhorted the youth to stand up with one voice against the unwanted things happening in the Manipuri society today.
Kumar noted that an individual alone could not change the society but through co-operation among each other a positive change can be definitely brought about.
In his presidential address, Dr Nara said the outcome of the convention should be formation of a youth-force to unit Manipur through peace and peaceful coexistence.
He also exhorted the youth to think globally but act locally.
Due to sudden ill health, MK Binodini could not attend the function in full.
But the ceremonial lamp lit by her continued to burn brightly.
In the academic session, Prof Gangmumei Kamei spoke on the topic of 'the role of youth for maintaining social harmony', Th Yaiskul Singh on 'youth for peace and peaceful coexistence, Dhanabir Laishram on 'fight against corruption and social justice and Chinglen Meisnam on the topic of 'unemployment and underdevelopmentcases of youth unrest'.
To mark the occasion, cultural dances were performed by various college students besides other entertainment programmes like Shumang Leela and songs.
The first session of the convention concluded with the resolution of sending a congratulatory note to the newly elected President of United States of America Barak Obama from the youth of Manipur.
