11th National Handloom Day observed

Joining the rest of the country, Weavers' Service Centre (WSC), Imphal celebrated the 11th National Handloom Day at its Design Resource Centre in Porompat today.
The celebration was organised under the sponsorship of the Office of the Development Commissioner of Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
Notably, National Handloom Day is celebrated annually on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, which encouraged the use of indigenous products and promoted the handloom industry.
The event was graced by dignitaries, including Dr N Johnson, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Imphal East; Dr Sinam Yoirentomba Meetei, Deputy Director, MSME Technology Centre, Imphal and W Shaya Devi, Sant Kabir Awardee.
The observation began with a welcome address by Sarbeswar Das, Deputy Director, WSC, Imphal followed by dissemination of handloom schemes by L Nirmala, Junior Printer, WSC, Imphal.
Distribution of Handloom E Pehchan cards, Samarth Skill Upgradation Training Certificates and Yam passbooks; and awareness on MUDRA Loan and Raw Material Supply Scheme were the main highlights of the event.
Moreover, the 11th National Handloom Day was also celebrated at Naorem Birahari College, Khundrakpam, jointly organised by the Bachelor of Fashion Designing Department, Home Science Department and IQAC of the college.
The event was held under the theme "Threads of Tradition: Weaving Culture through Handloom", was graced by Dr Irom Kunjabati Devi, Principal In-charge, Naorem Birahari College; Usham Dijen Singh, Secretary, College Governing Body; and Sarbeswar Das of WSC Imphal.
Demonstration of weaving, dyeing and printing, and handloom fashion design contest were the main highlights of the event.
