Commuters, residents flag unsafe condition of Old Palace Road

Imphal, April 04 2026: Commuters have raised serious safety concerns over the poor condition of the Old Palace Road, Heirangoithong-Manipur University, alleging prolonged neglect by authorities.

Despite being a key road connecting Langthabal, Heirangoithong, Singjamei and Canchipur, and widely used by students, local residents and office goers, it remains dilapidated.

Uneven surfaces, broken and filled with potholes and loose stones, commuting on the road is "difficult and risky" .

The road is frequently used by staff and students of institutes like the Manipur University, Manipur University of Culture and Catholic School.

During rainy days, there usually is water logging and the road becomes slushy, making it extremely unsafe for commuters.

"It has become dangerous to drive on the road," said a student of the Manipur University who commutes daily on the route.

The road is used by many people including school students and elderly daily, but it has seen no proper repair work in months.

If not repaired in time, accidents may occur, said the student.

Local residents also expressed their frustration, and said the road needs proper reconstruction and maintenance.

The pathetic condition of the road may hinder ambulance, fire and other emergency services, they said.

Dust from the road is also posing a health risk to commuters and locals in the area, they added.

Even though the road is vital for many in the region, it has been kept neglected, the residents said, urging the authorities concerned of the Government to repair and reconstruct the road before monsoon.

The road must be reconstructed with provision for repair or construction of a proper drainage system, they added.

Until it is repaired and reconstructed, people may be forced to "navigate" the road to avoid loose and protruding stones, potholes and broken sections, the residents said.
