Imphal, March 04:
The Personal Assistant (PA) of Tamei A/C MLA Awangbow Newmai identified as Ashang Pamei and three other persons were reportedly harassed by the Police Commandos at Naoremthong while they going from here yesterday and after charging them as NSCN (I-M) cadres, took away Rs 41500 and one mobile phone from them.
Talking to mediapersons in connection with this incident at the office chamber of Hill Area Committee chairman at the State Assembly building here this afternoon, Ashang Pamei recounted that at around 3 pm yesterday he was going along with N Wilubou (29) s/o Namjinkiubou of Chalton Village under Tamei Sub-division, Ex-Chairman N Khangton (51) s/o late Angan of Takou Khul and social worker Ch Mansi (43) s/o late Ch Nambonbou after submitting a report to MANIREDA in connection with distribution of solar lamps to the villages.
As they reached Naoremthong, the Police Commandos stopped and checked the vehicle they were travelling in, Ashang Pamei said, adding that while coming to Imphal, they saw the same police commando team at Naoremthong, but did not stop nor check the vehicle.
After being stopped their vehicle, the commandos took his mobile phone and checked the number of one Issac who runs a chemist shop at Tamenglong.
The Commandos charged that the Isaac in question is the leader of the NSCN (I-M) Issac Chisi Swu and they are cadres of the outfit loitering around in civil dresses while pointing a pistol on his forehead and threatening to kill them, Ashang said.
Despite clarifying that Issac is an innocent person who runs a pharmacy, the Commandos continued to torture them and demanded money.
As the Commandos did not listen to their pleading that they do not have any money, they finally collected Rs 5,000 from among themselves and handed over the same to the Commandos.
However, the commandos retorted by asking whether they think their uniform is worth only Rs 5,000 and threatened them to be taken away if they do not concede to their monetary demand.
At that relevant time, one contractor identified as Ashin Pamei of Langol Games Village came along for marketing.
Only after the contractor gave Rs 41500 to the Police Commandos, they were released.
However, before releasing them, the Police Commandos took away the mobile phone belonging to Ashin Pamei, Ashang said.
The registration number of the Gypsy used by the Commandos is MN1A-8070, Ashang Pamei added.
Earlier during the day, the matter was taken up by MLA Awangbow Newmai drawing the attention of the House members to the high-handedness of the Police Commandos.
