Imphal, October 03 2025:
Residents of Khewa Phurju, Imphal East district have denounced the attempts made by the State Police to arrest Thangjam Bakim, a prominent member of the United Makeng Dolaithabi GP Committee.
A joint meeting of local clubs, VDC members and Meira Paibis of Khewa Phuiju was held on Friday to discuss the unfortunate incident that took place at Khewa Phuiju on September 30 where police personnel in plainclothes were reportedly assaulted and their cars were vandalised by a mob.
At the meeting, Naharol Lamjing Phurup president Thokchom Sanjoy said that there is still a widespread sense of fear and apprehension among the people due to the conflict that has been going on in the State since May 2023 .
"On September 30, two vehicles were seen moving around in the area in a suspicious manner, creating fear and apprehension among the people.
The vehicles were without any registration number and the occupants were not in police uniform", said Sanjoy while adding that the violence broke out as a result of fear and misunderstanding.
He continued that the State Police's attempts to arrest Thangjam Bakim who is a respected member of the community, in connection with the incident of September 30 is unfortunate.
"If the police wish to arrest Thangjam Bakim, they should also arrest all the people of Khewa Phurju area as well", said Sanjoy while cautioning that the Meira Paibis, club and people of Khewa Phurju will be compelled to launch strong agitation if the State police continue to target local residents with trumped-up charges.
