A cleanliness drive was conducted today along the banks of Heirok-Wangjing River by Eco-Network Heirok in collaboration with City Club Heirok of Litan Thongkhong Heirok Part-II .
The cleanliness drive was conducted as a part of EcoNetwork's 'Heirok-Wangjing River Rejuvenation Campaign' to revive and conserve the river and prevent its further degradation.
In today's cleanliness drive held along the river banks, waste materials from various households including plastic materials dumped at the river banks were collected and the areas were cleaned, said a statement by Shinthangamba Laishram, President of Eco-Network Heirok.
The statement highlighted that the passersby are experiencing inconveniences owing to foul smell emanating from these waste materials due to prolonged dumping.
Expressing concern over the unhygienic environment, Eco-Network urged all to dump the waste materials at appropriate places for the convenience of all and segregate the waste materials into dry and wet materials for recycling and other beneficial purposes such as making organic compost from the kitchen waste and so on.
On a commendable note, the City Club of Heirok Part II Litan has started door to door garbage collection to ensure that these waste materials do not get dumped at rivers or river banks extending solidarity to Eco-Network's campaign.
The Network also expressed belief that other local clubs and organizations will follow the example set by the City Club and will initiate such welfare activities in their respective localities.
Further it appealed to all villages through which the Heirok-Wangjing River passes to make concerted efforts for the rejuvenation of the river which is of crucial importance.
Lastly it urged the relevant authorities and departments of the Government to take up sincere measures for the conservation of rivers and aid in making the campaign of the Eco-Network a success.
