Imphal, October 01 2026:
A team of doctors at Karkinos Healthcare, Porompat, successfully removed a 6-cm-long tumour from the pancreas of a 10-year-old girl.
Known as Whipple surgery, the procedure was conducted by a team led by the hospital's Medical Superintendent, Dr Sapam Opendro, who is also the Head of Surgical Oncology.
Speaking to the media, Dr Opendro said that the girl was referred to Karkinos after she developed abdominal pain accompanied by vomiting.
He said that a tumour measuring 6.2 6.1 cm was detected at the tip of the patient's pancreas during a CT scan.
Saying that the surgery took over five hours and was challenging given the patient's young age, Dr Opendro added that the girl is recovering under close medical supervision and is ready for discharge.
The patient's mother thanked the doctors at the hospital for saving her daughter and providing free treatment under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) .
