Imphal, August 01 2024:
Education Minister Thounaojam Basanta Kumar has stated that the Government has taken up measures to improve the academic atmosphere at Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) and Manipur Technical University (MTU) .
He made the statement while responding to a call attention motion raised by Congress MLA Surjakumar Okram on the second day of the 6th session of the 12th State Assembly, today.
Basanta Kumar continued that DMU is a State university recognised under Section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956 .
Saying that DMU has five constituent colleges viz DM Arts, DM Science, DM Commerce, LMS Law College and GP Women College, the Minister added that about 1,000 students are currently enrolled at DMU.
He went on to state that DMU has produced four batches of graduates and post graduates.
The Budget allocation for DMU is Rs 103.50 crore (salary and non-salary grant in aid), Basanta Kumar said.
Further stating that most of the day to day administrative work of the varsity is done by its syndicate and the State has a limited role, he added that 121 Assistant Professors and 155 non-teaching staff have been recruited after a new syndicate of DMU was constituted recently.
He also said that DMU now has a regular Registrar, Deputy Registrar and Controller of Examination.
Continuing that there is time to appoint a regular Vice Chancellor (VC) till August 9, the Minister added that the VC has to be appointed by the Chancellor on the recommendation of the search committee.
The semester examination of DMU could not be held on time due to unrest in Manipur and the shortage of teaching and non teaching staff in the varsity, he said and added that the pending examinations will be conducted very soon.
About MTU, there is a pending Court case pertaining to the appointment of the VC of the university.
The VC of MTU will be appointed after the Court gives its verdict on the case, Basanta Kumar maintained.
Saying that some examinations of MTU were held in online mode in February 2022, he added that students of the varsity want more examinations to be conducted virtually but the plea is put on hold as the Government believes conducting examinations in online mode will compromise the sanctity and integrity of examinations.
