Imphal, May 31 2024:
Highlighting the damages and economic losses suffered by a large number of people on account of the widespread flood caused by cyclone Remal, the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) has urged both the State Government and the Central Government to provide fair compensation to all the victims.
Heavy and incessant rainfall for two days brought by cyclone Remal led to breaching of river embankments and overflow of water current at many places.
As a result, many localities have been flooded, vast tracts of vegetable farms destroyed and a large number of fish farms ruined, AMUCO said in a press statement.
Earlier, a violent hailstorm/thunderstorm that swept in different parts of the State on May 5 caused massive destruction of vegetable farms as well as dwelling houses.
People have not yet recovered from the impacts of the violent hailstorm/thunderstorm when a widespread flood submerged large areas of the State.
As a result, people are reeling under extreme misery, it said.
Highlighting possible outbreak of many diseases among the people and livestock in the aftermath of the flood, AMUCO appealed to the authority concerned to be prepared to face any such eventuality.
Together with Irabot Foundation Manipur (IFM) and Youth Foundation for Fitness and Service (YOFFS), AMUCO has also been undertaking relief and rescue operations at many places, it said.
Volunteers of AMUCO, IFM and YOFFS took active role in evacuating stranded people from flood affected areas like Nagaram Tangkhul Avenue, Dewlahland, Lairikyengbam Maning Leikai etc to safer places on May 30 and 31 .
The volunteers also helped many people stranded by the flood in moving from one place to another using boats.
The volunteers visited some places where the river banks breached or the rivers were overflowing and extended aid to the affected people, it said.
Moreover, two boats have been given to the Nagaram Youth Club for transportation of people in the flooded areas of Nagaram Tangkhul Avenue, Dewlahland and Lairikyengbam Maning Leikai, it added.
