Wife goes to HC, legal option for Dhaka

Imphal, October 29 2010: Even as the wife of RK Meghen, the Chairman of the UNLF, RK ongbi Ibemnungshi has filed a Habeas Corpus petition before the Imphal bench of the Gauhati High Court today, a reliable source informed The Sangai Express that "Their Government (Bangladesh) will have to go to Court for further action for handing him (Meghen) over," to the Government of India.

After his reported arrest from Dhaka on September 29 this year, the whereabouts of the rebel chief has remained unknown with both Dhaka and Delhi not yet coming out with an official report on his status.

Rumours have also been circulating on where Meghen is presently and various organisations, cutting across the international boundaries had appealed on his behalf, but this has had no impact on either Delhi or Dhaka .

Aggrieved with the Central Govt's stoic silence on the reported arrest and whereabouts of the chairman of the banned outfit UNLF, RK Sanayaima alias Meghen, his wife, RK Ongbi Ibemnungshi Devi has filed a Habeas Corpus petition before the Imphal Bench of Gauhati High Court today.

The petition urged the Court to direct the State respondents Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Special Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs and the State represented by Chief Secretary to hand over Sanayaima to a police station in accordance with the due process of law in the event of his arrest.

Mentioning media reports, the petition said that Sanayaima was arrested by a team of Indian intelligence agency RAW and their Bangladeshi counterparts from Lalmatia area of Dhaka on September 29 last.

It may be mentioned that Sanayaima's whereabouts has not been ascertained till date despite the fact that his wife had lodged separate complaints to United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights and Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission on October 17 .

The petition said, "That, owing to the stoic silence and lackadaisical attitude adopted by the respondents, the petitioner and her sons have a reasonable apprehension that the potential arrestee have been kept under illegal confinement or, imagining the worst case scenario, been eliminated," Advocate Dolen Phurailatpam is the counsel of the petitioner.
