Imphal, August 27 2026:
A Puya (ancient text) which has been in the possession of one Thoudam Bimolchandra of Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai has been handed over to the Manipur State Archives.
Bimolchandra handed over the Puya preserved by his grandfather Thoudam Amu to Art and Culture Director K Dinamani today.
Bimolchandra said that he was handing over the Puya to the Manipur State Archives as he has neither resources nor knowledge to preserve the ancient text.
Hailing Bimolchandra for handing over the Puya to the Manipur State Archives, the Art and Culture Director appealed to all the people who are in possession of Puyas to bring these invaluable ancient texts to the Manipur State Archives for proper preservation.
Puyas are treasure troves of ancient knowledge covering myriad subjects including military strategies, civil administration, traditional medicine, religion, art of building houses etc but there are very few people these days who can read these ancient texts.
As such, the Art and Culture Department has been working to launch a Puya reading class, Dinamani said.
He said that a new building/section of the Manipur State Archives designated Puya House for keeping Puyas exclusively would be inaugurated by the Chief Minister
on august 31, 2026 .
