Sensitization programme on "Rights of Persons with Disabilities" held

Imphal, July 26 2025:
A 1-day sensitization and awareness programme on "Rights of Persons with Disabilities" was conducted today at the High Court of Manipur complex in Imphal.
The programme was organised by the Manipur Judicial Academy, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice Golmei Gaiphulsillu Kabui, Director, Manipur Judicial Academy, said that the programme was conducted to raise awareness and promote understanding of the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment.
"The Indian Government is dedicated to ensuring the full participation, protection of rights, and equal opportunities for all individuals, including PwDs", said Justice Golmei while adding that the commitment is reflected in various policies and legislation aimed at creating an inclusive society.
Highlighting the need to spread awareness about the rights of PwDs, Justice Golmei asserted that it will dismantle negative stereotypes, promote understanding, and ensure that PWDs can fully participate in all aspects of life.
In the technical sessions, S Jasobanta, Chief Functionary of Handicapped Development Foundation, delivered lectures on the topics, "Legal obligations and protections for PwDs under national & international frameworks" and "Handling cases involving PwDs including effective communication & procedural safeguards" .
L Dhaneshwor Singh, Deputy Director, Social Welfare Department, elaborated on the topics, "Sensitization on accessibility, reasonable accommodations and non-discriminatory practices in Judicial Proceedings" and "Best practices for ensuring inclusive and empathetic adjudication".
M Manojkumar Singh, Joint Director, Manipur Judicial Academy, spoke on the topic, "Role of Judicial Officers and PPs under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and its Provisions".
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Bandana Thokchom, Research Officer, Manipur Judicial Academy.
