Imphal, November 25: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Youth Front has demanded revision of the 2001 census report published by the Directorate of Census Operation, Manipur.

Talking to reporters at the Babupara office of RJD yesterday, its Youth Front president H Badankumar said disproportionate population growth cited in the 2001 census report regarding Senapati, Chandel and Ukhrul need to be re-surveyed.

Referring to the total population figure of 21,63,788 cited in the census 2001 report excluding figures culled from Senapati district sub-divisions of Mao, Maram and Purul, the Youth Front leader said when figures of the three sub-divisions are clubbed in the State population chart the total crossing 22.93 lakhs is incomprehensible and confusing data.

Elucidating on the contention, he said when comparison is made with the 1991 census figure of 18,37,149 the sudden rise in total population of the State in general and Senapati district in particular is confusing that can only be cleared after resurvey is conducted.

He also pointed out that population of Senapati accounts for 1,56,513 while addition of the three sub-divisions pushes the figure to 2.83 lakhs.

While Ukhrul stands at 1,40,778 Chandel district figures as placed in the 2001 census is 1,18,327, he added.

The abnormal population growth recorded in the ten year span suggests that either the census figure is not correct or that resurvey of the entire process is necessary, the youth president said.

On the other hand, despite gradual population growth in the four valley districts especially Bishnupur district during the 1951-1991 period compared to those cited in the latest survey records negligible growth, he added.

he desired that taking into account all the prevailing facts the 2001 census report need to be overhauled and a new survey ordered so that precision be recorded to the most possible extent.

Failure to rectify the flaws or following on the presented figure of the 2001 census might lead to complication and demographic mis-representation during the proposed delimitation process, Badankumar observed and suggested that the matter be placed before the ongoing Parliament session for necessary perusal and prompt action.
