Importance of mass awareness about Schizophrenia, social acceptance of patients highlighted

World Schizophrenia Day was observed on the theme 'Celebrating the Power of Community Kindness" at the Centre for Development Activities (CDAC) complex, Wangjing Bazar, Moirangthem Leirak today.
The observance was jointly organised by CDAC, Khangembam Tomba Memorial Trust and Shine Pharma.
Chief Medical Officer Thoubal Dr Y Nokul; IRE Group of Institutions Wangjing, founder principal Narengbam Rajivkumar; District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) Thoubal, Kangujam NongpokNganba and Wangjing Lamding Municipal Council former vice-chairperson Narengbam Binoy graced the event as the presidium members.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Moirangthem Sushilkumar Singh, founder of CDAC highlighted the importance to foster empathy and support for individuals with Schizophrenia, promote early intervention and treatment and raise awareness among the public, healthcare professionals and policy makers about this mental illness.
Dr Kh Robindro Singh, Senior Psychiatrist, District Hospital Chandel while speaking as the resource person expressed that persons suffering from mental illness and their families are stigmatised by the society which is really unfortunate.
Highlighting the importance of acceptance by the community, he maintained that every community member should make sincere efforts towards the treatment and rehabilitation of Schizophrenic patients.
The dignitaries while speaking at the observance stressed on the need of raising mass awareness about Schizophrenia and be empathetic towards those suffering from this mental illness by treating them with love and care.
They emphasized that the family members should ensure that the Schizophrenic patients receive proper medical treatment to help in their recovery enabling them to lead a normal life.
As a part of the programme, six women leaders of Wangjing area were felicitated for their remarkable contributions in the present crisis.
