Senapati, May 24 2019: The Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC), ADC, Senapati organized a one-day awareness camp at ADC Conference Hall in the presence of different executive members of ADC, Senapati; Dr Lokho Puni, Addl PCCF cum member secretary, MBB and officials of forest department under the sponsorship of Manipur Biodiversity Board (MBB), Imphal.

Speaking at the occasion, N Benjamin Tao, executive member, ADC, Senapati urged all to realise the need to preserve and protect forest before it is too late.

He further said that it is unfortunate to see local villagers to buy vegetables from the market rather than growing them at their own places.

The main objective of organizing such awareness programme is to motivate the BMCs of different villages of the district to initiate actions for the preservation of forests so that the region can witness a sustainable development, he added.

Thisho Kriina, Dy chairman, ADC, Senapati said that the programme was organized after much deliberation by the executive members of the ADC regarding the need and importance of preserving forest area in the region.

The Dy chairman also asked the BMCs to put it into practice when they go back to their respective villages.

Dr Lokho Puni spoke on the topic "The importance and benefits of BMC" as the resource person.

He said that laws are made by the legislators and is executed by the officials of different departments, but it is the duty of the public to put it into practice to bring development in a region.

Pointing the need to set up BMCs in the region, he said that people of the region only think of cutting down the timbers from the forest area which are in demand and burnt down the forest area totally ignoring the fact that there could be some valuable medicinal plants grown which might get destroyed before realising its medicinal values.

He said that the department could assist in setting up BMCs for the benefits of the region in the long run.

Kh Thaisii, DFO, ADC, Senapati cum member secretary, BMC also spoke on "The importance of forests and wildlife" as resource person.

Altogether, 116 delegates representing 93 villages of the district out of 140 revenue villages registered under ADC, Senapati came and took part in the programme.

In the later part of the programme, all the delegates present decided to set up BMCs in the region during the discussion for action plan followed by the distribution of forms to set up BMCs and booklets on the importance of it .
